New era in sheetfed offset packaging worldwide

Amcor Tobacco Packaging orders 19-unit KBA Rapida 106

Amcor Tobacco Packaging in Rickenbach, Switzerland, the innovation centre of one of a leading tobacco packaging enterprises, has ordered KBA sheetfed offset press whose configuration of 19 printing and finishing units will be unique in the global marketplace.

Amcor Tobacco Packaging management and representatives from KBA and Print Assist smiling for the camera following the purchase of a 19-unit Rapida 106 that sets new benchmarks worldwide (2)

Following installation at the end of August the high-tech Rapida 106 will be around 35m (114ft) long and have a first coater, two dryers, ten printing units, a second coater, two more dryers, a third coater and two more units with inert UV curing technology. It will even include an inline cold-foil finishing capability.

In recent years Amcor and KBA’s Swiss subsidiary Print Assist have worked together to find ways of optimising the technology and processes involved in printing high-quality cigarette packs. Their aim has been to print even exceptionally complex jobs and short runs faster while maximising short run flexibility. According to Amcor’s technical staff and management, it was KBA’s flexibility and innovative prowess that persuaded them to entrust the group with this challenging project.

A string of Rapidas have already found homes in the highly discerning Swiss printing market. When they are joined by the new 19-unit installation this will represent yet another record for KBA’s Rapida 106. Already the world makeready champion, it will then also be the world’s longest B1 (41in) press. The contract from Amcor is one of the biggest that KBA’s sheetfed offset division will book this year.

With 33,000 employees and more than 300 plants in 42 countries, Amcor is one of the leading packaging producers. Installing cutting-edge, powerful technology like the Rapida 106, which represents a landmark in the sector, places Amcor in an ideal position to sustain this growth and offer their customers unrivalled innovative potential on an ongoing basis.

In addition to optimising the production sequence the Rapida 106 at Amcor will enable a new job to be made ready while the current job is still running at maximum speed. The ultra-short set-up times thus achieved mean that even short runs entailing complex finishing can be printed efficiently inline. Some of the features that make this possible by virtually eliminating changeover times are disengageable inking units, DriveTronic SPC dedicated plate-cylinder drives and, in the coater, DriveTronic SFC simultaneous forme change and Anilox-Loader automatic anilox roller change. Mounted on a 450mm (17.7in) plinth, the record-breaking Rapida will also be equipped with a board-handling capability and a Vinfoil Infigo SF110-GF device for cold foil. Other features will include automatic nonstop systems at the feeder and delivery, integration in an automated pile-logistics system, CleanTronic Synchro for simultaneous washing during changes of ink (conventional/UV) and KBA VariDry IR, UV and thermal dryers. QualiTronic Professional inline colour control will inspect the sheets and tag faulty images.

As is common with such complex configurations, the contract was signed only after exhaustive print tests had been carried out. “We are looking forward to installing this high-end industrial press line which for our company heralds a new era in packaging printing and gives us a major competitive edge in the market,” enthuses Jerzy Czubak, Amcor Tobacco Packaging’s COO and vice-president of its European operation. Peter J Rickenmann, managing director of Print Assist, says: “I am delighted to be working with Amcor on this groundbreaking project, which has caused something of a sensation in the industry. Our mutual trust and confidence is a sound basis for the future.”

A straight-on press with 19 printing and finishing units – including cold foil – and a total length of 35 metres will be installed later this year at Amcor Tobacco Packaging in Rickenbach, Switzerland (3)

KBA sales director Sascha Fischer adds: “Our association with Amcor started in Australia in 2007. It is being continued with a technological milestone in Europe that the sector has never seen before.” Amcor Cartons in West Heidelberg, a suburb of Melbourne, operates a Rapida 142 with six printing units, a coater and extended delivery. Two years ago it was joined by a seven-colour Rapida 106 with DriveTronic SIS no-sidelay infeed, a board-handling package, automatic plate changing and a coater. Amcor also has a six-colour Rapida 105 with inline finishing capabilities in Auckland, New Zealand.

Drupa 2012

3 to 16 May in Düsseldorf

1.
KBA stand / exhibits

KBA has taken a 3,500m² (37,675ft²) stand (C47-1/2) in hall 16. This year’s banner, “sprinting ahead”, underscores our conviction that even 200 years after the invention of the cylinder printing press by Friedrich Koenig there are still plenty of opportunities for print in today’s multi-media environment, and that KBA, as a press innovator, will actively shape the future of print. We are therefore moving into digital print with a high-volume web-fed inkjet press using Kyocera printing heads and water-soluble inks for the personalized full-color production of books, commercials and magazines.

Our primary focus at Drupa will be on sheet fed presses, with five Rapidas on the stand spanning the entire spectrum from commercial to packaging and small to large format, and combining digital inkjet with offset (Rapida 105).

For web press users we are also displaying printing units of our new automated Commander CL newspaper press and 16-page C16 commercial web press – both complete with automatic plate changing and console – plus a quarter-fold.

In addition to an upgraded Genius 52UV, our subsidiary KBA-MePrint will be presenting a new variable-format web press for flexible and rigid packaging, while KBA-Metronic will be exhibiting thermal inkjet addressing systems, also for packaging. Our Indian alliance partner The Printers House (TPH) will be sharing the stand for the first time and will be showing a single-width Orient newspaper press with integrated folder.

On the Toray stand nearby the focus will be on sustainability, with a Rapida 106 waterless UV offset press demonstrating its capabilities on a selection of challenging substrates.

The messages we are seeking to impart are:

- Rapida 75: New advances in B2

- Rapida 105: Rapida 106 and inkjet inside

- Rapida 106: World make-ready champion with new features

- Rapida 145: Trust the leader in large format and packaging printing

- KBA web-fed digital press: Engineering excellence for the digital market

- Metronic packaging web press: Web offset quality with format flexibility for packaging

- Commander CL, C16: Innovative web offset technology for markets in transition

In the Solution Centre staff will demonstrate continuous workflows with Kodak CTP and Logica Sistemi MIS. In the adjacent Technology Lounge visitors can find out more about LED and HR-UV systems, energy management (Panasonic) with heat recovery, climate-neutral print production (Climate Partner) and other topics. The central office, store-room, cloakroom (240 lockers) and 19 air-conditioned conference rooms (all with seating for 6 people, with one room each for web-fed and sheet fed service plus three VIP rooms mainly reserved for members of the board) will be located on the ground floor. KBA-NotaSys will again have a dedicated zone. There will be two reception/information desks at the entrance, with access to the exhibition area either directly from the main passageway that runs through the hall or from the side passageways. Although the exhibits will take up a lot of space we are retaining the forum concept so as to insulate visitors for as long as possible from the hubbub of the hall and encourage them to stay with us. Because some of the presses are extra long, access to the courtyard is mainly via the central aisle the kitchen, restaurant and bar, with seating for 380 and a view of the exhibits, will be on the upper floor along with seven air-conditioned conference rooms and a VIP room.

2.
Drupa 2012 banner “sprinting ahead”

This will feature widely on the stand, print samples etc. We are seeking to reassure customers and prospects by imparting an image of innovation, reliability and solid worth, with a personal touch. Please also be sure to point out the Technology Lounge and the waterless Rapida 105-5+C+UV on the adjacent Toray stand.

3.
Press demonstrations

All the Rapidas sheet-fed presses exhibited, and the new digital web press, will be demonstrated “live” (3 to 4 shows per press per day) in German and English alternately, as per the schedule in your Drupa flyer. Please refer to this schedule when arranging for prospects to attend a demonstration. For organizational reasons, demonstrations for individual customers or groups are only possible by prior arrangement with our stand directors, Klaus Schmidt or Jürgen Veil.

Demos of KBA-MePrint’s packaging web press and Genius 52UV will be held independently of the video shows. The C16 and Commander CL printing units and the quarter-fold will be demonstrated individually by KBA staff according to demand. KBA Radebeul is planning to issue personal invitations to VIP customers to attend special demonstrations of our new sheet fed offset presses on selected days, in the relatively quiet period immediately after the doors open. You will be sent details in due course.
